CGN.ink Mission Statement

Celebrity Gossip & News

Mission statement: We are to write stories that may not be entirely true, but we, personally, wish they were.

Gossip is not supposed to be 100% true. It has a social function of building interest around an intriguing person and allowing people to talk about that person without actually intruding into their private affairs. Sometimes, there is a feel-good factor in simply getting to say the name of an interesting person in a sentence, even if we knew the details and origin of the story were sketchy at best. The falsehoods and untruths are there to PROTECT THE PRIVACY of the people involved, not to taint their name or to be mean.

Gossip may also serve another purpose: to punish an individual who has greatly violated the expectations we have on them as a community and society; You do not lie about your ex-partner’s violence, drinking, or sexual exploits; you do not hit your wife or your husband, you do not cheat on your partner, thou shalt not do revenge porn, you do not deliberately pass on STD’s, you know, without becoming a social outcast.

Good gossip is supposed to be fun for both the gossiper and the gossipee unless it is to punish someone.

Gossip may also assist young people to learn the intricacies of romantic and sexual relationships, what is expected, allowed, and out of limits. Celebrities and intriguing personalities are examples that we use, as people, to examine, contemplate, and educate what is right and what is wrong, what is ideal, what is admirable and acceptable, and also what we honestly condemn.Β

And last but not least, gossip functions as a conversation starter, as we talk about people we both know – even if we were complete strangers to each other. Celebrities provide a sense of familiarity and connection; even if I am Australian and you are Japanese, we both have mutual acquaintances in Johnny Depp and Britney Spears.
